With events spanning from documentary screenings to art therapy, this year’s Women’s History Month celebrates the impact of women on today’s culture.
Bringing students, their different viewpoints and different messages together was the driving force behind planning for the month’s events.
“We tried to choose events that represent a variety of identities and provide students with experiential learning opportunities,” explains Lauren Ouwerkerk, assistant director for the Center for Women and Gender Equity.
“Our programs are partnerships with a variety of student organizations and offices across campus to show that Women’s History should not be relegated to just the Center for Women and Gender Equity,” Ouwerkerk says.
Featured speaker, Danielle Hurd, visits campus on Monday, March 5. Born and raised in Birmingham Al., she brings a unique perspective of living in the Southeast as a queer woman of color. Hurd now lives in Washington D.C. where she works as the leadership development coordinator for URGE: Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity.
“Her background in activism will hopefully inspire our students to become more involved in creating change on campus,” Ouwerkerk says.
