UTC Counseling Center is championing counseling and mental health awareness for the month of April. Center representatives will be in the University Center lobby on Wednesday, April 25, with complimentary massages, refreshments and information on how to improve emotional, psychological and social well-being at the end of the semester.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five Americans are affected by a mental health condition in their lifetime.
The counseling center is more than just a resource for students experiencing depression, anxiety and adjustment to college life, says Counselor Carmen Lewis.
“We also provide services for crisis intervention, post-trauma, and maintenance therapy for individuals with long-term mental health diagnoses,” Lewis adds.
Relaxation techniques, practical living skills and general support are offered through therapy groups at UTC. The Counseling Center’s staff is trained “to see a spectrum of concerns,” Lewis says, and can provide outreach across campus in forms of training, presentations or the presence of support staff from the center.
