Freshmen move their stuff into a residence hall during Operation Move-In.
Hi there. If you’re reading this, you’re probably one of the 3,487 students who will be living in UTC residence halls in fall semester. Welcome.
For incoming freshmen only—unless you’re an upperclassmen with official permission—Operation Move-In takes place Thursday, Aug. 16, so you should have gathered all your stuff together. If you have an even room number, you can move in from 9 a.m. to noon; if you have an odd number, move in between 1-4 p.m. Volunteers are available to help direct you and also assist with carrying your belongings to your room.
Upperclassmen will move in on Saturday, Aug. 18.

Living on campus is a great way to take advantage of everything the university has to offer as well as introduce yourself to your new UTC family. It’s a chance to meet new people, learn about organizations and social groups and participate in the abundance of activities taking place on campus.
According to student surveys, those who report the highest satisfaction with living on campus “often” or “very often” attend events sponsored in the residence halls. And 93.5 percent of students in residential housing last year reported that they made at least one new friend as a result of living on campus. Studies show that on-campus students even get better grades.
UTC residence halls are at 97 percent capacity, so very few rooms are left, says Valara Sample, director of Housing and Residence Life, and even the newly opened West Campus Housing is 96 percent occupied. About 60 percent of the students living in residential housing are freshmen, 24 percent are sophomores, 10 percent are juniors and 6 percent are seniors, figures show.
If students still need a room assignment or to change their current room, they may apply online or stop by the Housing and Residence Life Office in Stacy Town Center at 815 University St. A Free Move/Room Change period runs from Aug. 22-29.
