Operation Move In at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga kicks off Aug. 13-14 and marks the beginning of Fall Opening. Whether you’re moving in or just helping unload, a few smart steps can make the day go more smoothly.
Check out the Operation Move In info page for all the information, but here’s a basic rundown.
Before you arrive
A little planning can save you a lot of frustration.
- Check your move-in time and unloading zone in your housing portal and stick to your assigned window. Don’t arrive early—it can throw off the flow for everyone.
- Download your unloading pass and screenshot it, just in case.
- Print your UTC moving labels and stick them on your boxes. It speeds things up for volunteers and helps get your stuff to the right room.
- Talk to your roommate ahead of time to coordinate who’s bringing what.
- Pack with quick access in mind. The items you’ll want right away (like toiletries or bedding) should be packed last so they come out first.
Pro Tip: Bring a small tool kit. A screwdriver or measuring tape comes in handy more often than you’d think.
Move-in day
Operation Move In at UTC is busy but well-supported. Students, staff and even our new chancellor, Dr. Lori Bruce, will be out helping unload, directing traffic and getting students settled in.
- Label everything with your name and room number. Painter’s tape works great and comes off clean.
- Dress for the heat and stay hydrated—it’s August in Tennessee.
- Use bins or laundry baskets with handles for easier carrying.
- Expect some waiting. Elevators fill up, traffic slows down. Remember, patience is a virtue, especially on move-in day.
What to bring (and what to leave at home)
You’ll find a full packing list in the official housing guide, but here are a few reminders:
Commonly forgotten but useful items:
- Shower shoes
- Extension cords and power strips (check for surge protection)
- Command strips and hooks
- First-night bag with essentials like clean clothes, meds, toiletries and your phone charger
Items not allowed in residence halls:
- Candles or any open flame devices
- Hot plates, air fryers or appliances with exposed heating elements
- Pets (sorry, even lizards)
