A group of UTC students enrolled in a history course, The Holocaust: Perpetrators, Victims, and Bystanders, are taking a different kind of spring break—a Holocaust study tour in Poland and Germany.

Led by Dr. John Swanson, head of the Department of History, the group will hear lectures, engage in discussions, and visit Holocaust-related sites, as well as participate in various cultural activities in Berlin and Cracow.
Throughout the trip, Michael Lawrence, a junior finance major, and Caitlin Peabody, a sophomore secondary education: history major, will blog and provide regular updates beginning Monday, March 10.
Lawrence, who is also minoring in German, is looking forward to a chance to study outside of the classroom.
“I’m really excited to experience and study this part of history in a more in-depth and personal way, rather than through a text book or in a classroom. It’s also a great opportunity to dive into the culture while getting to utilize my ability to speak the language,” Lawrence said.
The group will return on March 16th. In Europe, they will visit Cracow Ghetto, Schindler Factory, Auschwitz, and Birkenau as well as a number of museums and memorials.
When they are not on guided tours or attending lectures, students are encouraged to explore the cities on their own.
“I’m a history nerd. I’m especially interested in World War II and the Holocaust. This will be my first time travelling abroad, and I am really looking forward to seeing and learning about these places,” said Peabody.
Be sure to check back for updates during the trip. For more information email John-Swanson@utc.edu.
