May graduate Glenn Garrett was among the first UTC students to declare nuclear engineering as his emphasis of study. Before he picked up his diploma for both a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with Nuclear Emphasis, Garrett’s achievements as a TVA intern were applauded, because the results had national and international impact on the nuclear industry.

On campus, Garrett was recently recognized by the UTC Student Government Association Academic Affairs Committee as an Outstanding Senior for demonstrating “the highest levels of academic achievement.” His former instructor, TVA manager, and mentor Ron Bruno agrees.
While Garrett was a student in Bruno’s introductory UTC course in nuclear power engineering, Bruno encouraged Garrett to apply for an internship with TVA. Garrett is interested in nuclear power because he sees it as “a viable option for green, carbon-free energy production.”
“Glenn is an exceptional self-starter who can get things done quickly and accurately, with little guidance needed. He had good job interaction with the people at TVA. We treated him like any other employee,” Bruno explained.
In the first months of his internship, Garrett improved the software TVA was using for conducting and monitoring Human Performance assessments, according to a TVA newsletter for employees. His work was noticed by Steven E. Nichols, Vice President of The Institute for Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), who invited Garrett to develop upgrades and modifications for the INPO database.
After Garrett completed the work, Nichols sent a letter of personal gratitude to Garrett, thanking him for completing all the IT-related updating of the industry field notes database “ahead of schedule and with high quality.” The database upgrades Garrett made have had an impact on nuclear power plants all over the world, because they have been adopted by the World Association of Nuclear Operations (WANO).
