Seniors in the greater Chattanooga area are invited to join ElderScholars and engage in academic, social and cultural experiences on the UTC campus. ElderScholars plan interesting, entertaining and useful session programs and more.
The first meeting of this year’s ElderScholars will be Tuesday, September 9, at 1 p.m. in the Ocoee Room of the University Center. David Carroll, news anchor and reporter for WRCB-TV 3’s Eyewitness News and author, will be the guest speaker.
“I have made new friends with similar interests, and I continue to learn from our great guest speakers,” said Ray Millard, UTC ElderScholars president. “The purpose of ElderScholars is to enhance the quality of life of senior citizens in the greater Chattanooga community through participation in mind stimulating academic, social, and cultural activities in a university environment.”
Although the group is aimed at individuals 55 years or older, participation in the ElderScholars presentations is open to the public free of charge. The ElderScholars also promotes free UTC audit programs for those 60 and better.
David Carroll has been well-known in Chattanooga radio and television for 35 years. He started at WFLI radio and was later the first voice on KZ-106 when it signed on the air. He switched to TV in 1983, and has anchored the evening news for Channel 3 since 1987. Carroll has written Chattanooga Radio and Television, a photographic history of local broadcasting and the personalities who have made it great. The book features hundreds of photos of local broadcasters from 1925 until the present. Autographed books will be available at the end of the program, for $20, which includes tax.
“If you want to make new friends, if you want to hear presentations from some of the most knowledgeable speakers, and if you want to learn about interesting subjects, then come join us at ElderScholars,” says Millard. “You don’t have to be elderly or a scholar to gain enrichment from our meetings!”
