The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department has successfully achieved ABET-CAC accreditation.
Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization that accredits college and university programs in the disciplines of applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.
“Every Engineering and Computer Science program in this country and far beyond aspires to be accredited by ABET. Accreditation by ABET is a sign of high quality for your programs,” said Dr. Joseph Kizza, Department Head and Professor of Computer Science and Engineering. “ABET assessment of the degree programs is very rigorous, comprehensive and at the same time supportive of program faculty. So for CSE and UTC, it is a great accomplishment because it puts us on the list of those great programs accredited by ABET.”
“This is a great success for the CSE Department,” said Dr. Neslihan Alp, Interim Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science.
CSE offers four different concentrations: Scientific Application, Software Systems, Information Security and Assurance, and STEM Computing.
Alumni from the CSE program have gone on to work at major companies such as Microsoft, HP, and Google. They have worked in fields varying from game design to biochemical engineering.
“Our students are doing amazing things wherever they go,” said Kizza. “Nearly all our students get jobs upon graduation with very high starting salaries. We have a large number of our students in the start-up communities here in Chattanooga and beyond.”
CSE hopes to be able to offer a concentration in Data Science in the future, with eventual Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. They also hope to be able to offer doctoral degrees in their specializations at some point in the future.
“With a few exceptional periods of recession, a degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering is a great investment in the future of any individual; that is why we are experiencing great increases in our major and concentrations,” said Kizza.
