The Holocaust lecture “Preserving Jewish Memory in Eastern Europe: Holocaust Education in the Twenty-First Century” by Edward Serotta, Director of Centropa, will be presented on Tuesday, October 14, at 6 p.m. in the Raccoon Mountain Room of the UTC University Center.
This event is free and open to the public.
Serotta, who spent his formative years in Chattanooga (1963-1967), has been living in Europe since 1985. During his first 15 years, he produced four films and published three books on Jews in Eastern Europe. As a journalist he covered the fall of Communism in 1989 and the siege of Sarajevo, 1993-1995.
Since 2000, Serotta has been directing Centropa, a Vienna-based Jewish historical institute that uses new technologies to preserve Jewish memory in the lands decimated by the Holocaust.
Centropa uses those same technologies to work with more than 500 schools in 20 countries, creating new ways of connecting 21st century teenagers with 20th century European history—and with each other.
Following Serotta’s talk, there will be a spirited discussion on Holocaust memory, anti-Semitism in Europe and how teenagers in America, Europe and Israel are using social media to create their own projects and share them with each other.
