During the season of giving, UTC students have participated in several philanthropic activities. These videos exemplify just a couple of those activities.
Angel Tree
The 2016 Angel Tree campaign was presented by the Student Alumni Council (SAC). UTC students, faculty, and staff were able to sponsor a child in need this holiday to buy them necessities and gifts.
“We’ve definitely seen a [participation] increase this year. We started with 150 names and had to get more names,” said Savannah Wexler, a junior who is in SAC.
After the gifts are donated, student volunteers wrap and organize them before taking them to the site where families can pick up their gifts.
“It’s wonderful that I can come to a campus where we’re all about love and giving back to the community, which means a lot to me,” said Jennifer Vesey, a freshman member of Gamma Phi Beta who donated to the Angel Tree campaign.
Turkey Train
The Turkey Train was the brainchild of Amanda Morgan Fann, Freshman Senate Campus & Community Service Chair, who thought this would be a fun way to help feed underprivileged families. The Train challenged student organizations to see which one could raise the most money for the cause and take home this year’s Turkey Train trophy.
“During the holidays, some people can’t celebrate because they’re worried if they’ll even make it to the next day because they don’t have food. This provides them with a worry free day of being with their families,” said Fann.
In total, 20 turkeys and $120 were donated to the Chattanooga Food Bank. Students lined Cardiac Hill to pass the turkeys hand to hand up the hill and into the waiting Food Bank trucks, where they would go to families in need.
Monte Coulter
On November 21, the UTC Percussion Ensemble presented the 10th annual “Beat Hunger” concert, to benefit the Chattanooga Community Kitchen. Hundreds of audience members donated money and food items as admission. The UTC Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr.Monte Coulter, is an ensemble of all UTC students.
