The LeRoy A. Martin Distinguished Lecturer Series and UTC Department of Philosophy and Religion present two lectures on the Dead Sea scrolls.
James VanderKam, John A. O’Brien Professor of Hebrew Scriptures at the University of Notre Dame, will present the first lecture “The Community in the Scrolls and Jesus’s First Followers” on Wednesday, January 20, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the University Center, Raccoon Mountain Room. This lecture will explain how the people described in the Dead Sea scrolls understood themselves as a community.
VanderKam’s field of expertise is history and literature of Early Judaism and the Hebrew Scriptures. His research in the last 15 years has focused on the Dead Sea scrolls and related literature. He is a member of the editorial committee that is preparing the editions of the remaining unpublished scrolls.
“Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bible” will be presented as a second lecture on Thursday, January 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Benwood Auditorium.
This multi-media presentation provides an introduction to the Dead Sea scrolls and the people who owned and used them. It will also deal with the many contributions that the scrolls have made to our knowledge and understanding of the Bible.
