The mathematics department has partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee to host its third annual poster contest, open to all area high school, middle school, and home schooled students on Saturday, February 20, 10 a.m.-noon, University Center, Tennessee Room.
There will be three competition categories. Category one includes seventh and eighth grades, category two, ninth and tenth grades, and category three eleventh and twelfth grades.
Mathematics Assistant Professor John Matthews said students may work alone or on teams of up to three. This year’s poster contest theme is “Mathematics in the Environment.”
“The UTC Mathematics Poster Competition encourages students to explore mathematical ideas in the world around them and then present those ideas to professionals in the field. That kind of engagement is precisely the kind of intellectual exercise we want all students to experience,” said Matthews.
Judges will look for creativity, how the poster relates to the theme, and whether or not the mathematical content is presented clearly and correctly. Judges will award cash prizes in each of the three categories, $200 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place.
