Dr. Roger Thompson, UTC Associate Professor of Criminal Justice, has been appointed to a three-year term to the Office of Multicultural Affairs Advisory Board by Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield.
Thompson had previously served a one-year appointment with the office where he chaired a task force on crime. The Office of Multicultural Affairs was established to encourage understanding and goodwill, to promote justice, and to eliminate discrimination between and among the citizens of Chattanooga because of race, religion, national origin, age, sex, disability or ethnicity.
Thompson will be involved in a hate crime prevention initiative and H.A.N.D.S. (Helping All Nationalities Diversify Society) Across Chattanooga, a program helping these new residents become more familiar with the city.
“We’re ready to come up with ideas and move forward,” he said.
“Dr. Thompson has been at UTC for over 30 years and is the embodiment of community engagement,” Dr. Helen Eigenberg, Professor and Head of the UTC Criminal Justice Department, said. “This newest appointment illustrates the ways in which faculty in the criminal justice program and UTC give back to the community by participating in valuable partnerships.
As part of his duties, Thompson will also author another report on crime in Chattanooga to give recommendations on reducing juvenile delinquency and related risk factors, improving criminal justice and community relations, and enhancing criminal justice accountability.
“We are lucky to have someone like Dr. Thompson who gives countless hours of service in his field to helping address issues in Chattanooga,” Dr. Eigenberg continued.
