The Sharrock family got more than a new home when the bus rolled away on “Extreme Home Makeover.” The family also received college scholarships to UTC.
“It’s a dream come true,” Michael Sharrock said. “I’ve still got all of my college books. When I was honest with myself, I thought I would never make it back to college.”
“It was something I didn’t ask for and didn’t expect,” he continued. “I believe it’s going to be very fulfilling for me.”
Michael and Cindy Sharrock received scholarships for Michael to finish his biology degree and nine-year-old son, Patrick, to attend UTC. The family were presented certificates by Chancellor Dr. Roger Brown, his wife, Dr. Carolyn Thompson, Terry Denniston, UTC chief of staff, and Scrappy, UTC’s mascot.
“We’ve always wanted him to finish his education, and now he can,” Shirley Sharrock, Michael’s mother, said.
James McArthur, Michael’s brother, said “I knew when they announced that UTC was furthering his education that Mom was going to jump for joy. I started crying. It’s just unbelievable.”
“All of us started crying,” Shirley Sharrock continued.
A crew from “Extreme Home Makeover” and thousands of area volunteers demolished the family’s 50-year-old house in Rossville, Georgia and replaced it with a new Irish cottage style home. The main purpose of the project was to build a safe house for Patrick, who has a form of brittle bone disease and has had many injuries occur at home.
“What a great feeling to know that this community stepped up to take care of their scholarships and mortgage,” Brady McConnell, executive producer for “Extreme Home Makeover,” said. “You people did everything that you could possibly do.”
