On April 8, 9 , and 10, the UTC Music Department presents UTC Opera Theatre in performances of Mark Adamo’s Little Women. The concert will take place on April 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. and April 10 at 3:00 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall in the UTC Fine Arts Center.
Adamo’s Little Women is based on the famous American novel by Louisa May Alcott. The story centers on the life of Jo March and her three sisters. These four sisters are very close, and Jo would like nothing better than to spend the rest of her life with her sisters around her. But, to Jo’s surprise, things change. As her sisters start to pursue their own directions in life, Jo becomes adamant and determined to keep her life as it is, despite what her sisters do.
She escapes to the attic of her family’s house, distraught that her sisters have chosen different paths from her own. In an effort to discover what went wrong, Jo begins to relive these moments of change in the attic. People in her life appear from the dusty, dark corners to reenact these experiences. Finally, Jo accepts the changes in her life and forgives her sisters in her own heart.
Adamo’s Little Women premiered at Houston Grand Opera in March 1998. Since its successful premiere, the opera has been performed all over the United States as well as international performances in Europe, Canada, Australia, and Israel. Few American operas have succeeded as well as Little Women, staging over 100 performances since its premiere 13 years ago.
