The Office of Alumni Affairs is pleased to announce the 2011 UTC Distinguished Alumnus is Dr. Rhonda A. Scott, Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services at Grady Health System in Atlanta, Georgia. Scott and Frank J. Kinser, the 2011 recipient of the Outstanding Service Award, will be honored at the UTC Alumni Board’s annual Legends & Leaders Dinner to be held Friday, May 6, at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club.
During her 27-year nursing career, Scott has experience as a critical care nurse, educator, clinical nurse specialist, entrepreneur, author, researcher, consultant and administrator. She is a member of several professional nursing associations, and has served as President of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists.
Widely recognized for her achievements in nursing, Scott was awarded Tenet’s “Outstanding Chief Nursing Officer Award” and received the “Up and Comers Award” from Modern Healthcare magazine for rising stars in healthcare management.
Scott serves on the Community Advisory Board of the College of Health Sciences at Georgia State University. She was appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Service to serve on the National Advisory Council on Nursing Education & Practice, which advises the Secretary of HHS and Congress on national nursing issues.
After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UTC, Scott received her Master’s of Science in Nursing from Rush University in Chicago and the Ph.D. in Nursing Science with a focus on Advanced Practice Nursing & Health Care Administration from Georgia State University. She is also a graduate of the Johnson & Johnson – Wharton Fellows Program in Management for Nurse Executives from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Kinser, President and Owner of East Brainerd Lumber Company, Inc., is a lifelong resident of Chattanooga. He attended public schools in Chattanooga and is an alumnus of The University of Chattanooga. His father, Paul Kinser, was the first recipient of the UTC Outstanding Service Award in 1985.
The Outstanding Service Award was created to recognize enthusiastic and committed service to the University.
Kinser has served on the Alumni Council, the Athletics Advisory Board, and was Chairman of the season football ticket drive. He hosts “Porky’s Open” annually, a golf tournament which has raised more than $1 million for UTC Athletics.
He is also a past president of the UTC Chancellor’s Roundtable, past president of The UTAA Hamilton County Chapter and a member of The University of Tennessee Board of Governors.
From 1996-2002, Kinser served on The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees. Kinser and his father Paul hold a unique honor: Frank is the only son to have followed his father in service on the UT Board of Trustees. Kinser has also served on the UT Development Council.
Currently, Kinser is the Vice Chairman of the SimCenter Enterprises Board; he serves on the Stadium Board and initially served as Chairman of the construction committee for Finley Stadium. He later served two terms as President and chair of the Stadium Board.
In 2005, Kinser received the Gordon Davenport Award at the annual UTC Athletics Hall of Fame dinner. He has served on the Dunaway Hunting and Fishing Club Board of Directors and is a charter member and board Vice President of the Partners of the Cherokee National Forest.
