To honor the memory of those lost in September 11,, 2011 and to honor all military and first responders who serve at home and abroad, the University held a candlelight vigil outside Patten Chapel. U.S. Army General (Retired) B.B. Bell, a Distinguished Alumnus of the University, spoke of America’s strength and dignity.
“America was, is, and will continue to represent for its’ citizens and for all the people of the world a shining city on a hill. We have not fallen,” Bell said.
UTC Chancellor Roger Brown said, “The mission to bring peace to the world now finds men and women in all branches of the armed forces in harm’s way. We salute them and their families for the sacrifices they make each and every day, and we pray for the day they can return safely home.”
Brown tied the anniversary of the University’s 125th anniversary to the anniversary of September 11, 2001, with a symbol of hope, the lighting of a candle.
“125 years ago, the first structure to house this campus was located on this very spot, and a reporter wrote that when the building was illuminated at night, it became a light upon a hill. Since that time, our campus has stood as a beacon of opportunity through education. Tonight, let us take a moment to share the light of promise as we remember those who died in the September 11 attacks, as we honor those who serve and protect us here at home and around the world, and as we unite in spirit for peace in the future,” he said.
