The UTC Percussion Ensemble returns with their annual “Beat Hunger” concert this semester on Sunday, November 20, and Monday, November 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Roland Hayes Concert Hall in the UTC Fine Arts Center. The group is directed by Dr. Monte Coulter, Director of Percussion Studies.
“Beat Hunger” is a benefit for the Chattanooga Community Kitchen, and over the last 12 years, has become the start of the traditional giving season in Chattanooga. The admission to the concert is two non-perishable food items, or a $2 check donation to the Community Kitchen. The ensemble proudly welcomes the guest appearance of Chattanooga’s own street drumming ensemble, “Funkabuckets”, who will be performing in the Fine Arts Center lobby prior to the program.
The UTC Percussion Ensemble has established a reputation in the Southeast for their programming of pieces of music for the standard drums and cymbals, as well as the more exotic iron pipes, saws, brake drums, and the full array of keyboard mallet instruments. The group has been the training ground for a generation of percussion teachers and performers, including Grammy winners, Tony winners, and graduates of the world’s most prestigious music conservatories.
The ensemble will be performing works by JS Bach, Brett Dietz, David Mancini, Wolfgang Mozart, J.B.Smith, and Phil Faini.
