A special group of nursing students gave thanks a little early this year and volunteered to staff the annual turkey drive in support of the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.
According to Dr. Martina Harris, DREAMWork nursing students engaged in this community service event from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m., collecting turkeys, canned food and additional items at the Barn Nursery.
“This is the third year we participated,” Harris said. “DREAMWork is a nursing diversity program which increases nursing education opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly racial and ethnic minorities. The turkey drive is tied to the mission of the DREAMWork grant and the mission of UTC as an engaged metropolitan university,” said Harris, faculty advisor.
The turkey drive is critical for the success of the Chattanooga Community Kitchen throughout the year, according to Jens Christensen, Assistant Director.
“UTC nursing students’ assistance is a particularly great benefit. Along with their help in foot care for the homeless, UTC nursing students help the Community Kitchen carry out its mission,” Christensen said.
