In anticipation of this summer’s Olympic Games, the Special Collections of the UTC Lupton Library is exhibiting books, photographs, and mementos from the Berlin Olympics of 1936.
Mary Louise Summer, a University of Chattanooga alumnus from the 1930s, donated books from Germany about the 1936 Winter and Summer Olympics. Her collection includes the 1936 Summer Olympics book, a book on the 1936 Winter Olympics (also held in Germany), a Germany-produced book on the 1932 Summer Olympics, held in Los Angeles, and sports cards of 1936 Olympic events and athletes.
In the exhibit, both in display cases in the library and online, pictures and the books from the 1936 Olympics are featured.
“The 1936 Summer Olympics was noteworthy in that Germany hoped to showcase their athletes as being the best in the world. Even though they did win more gold medals than any other country, their athletes proved to be somewhat vulnerable, particularly in the track and field events where Americans such as Jesse Owens were victorious over the German athletes,” Steve Cox, Head of Special Collections and University Archivist, said.
