Are you having trouble choosing between two or three majors? Would a mixture of majors better fit your career aspirations? Maybe the Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS) degree is for you.
The BIS degree will be offered in fall 2012 for those who wish to build a personalized program of study with the option to integrate two or more disciplines.
Those with prior learning credits and documentation–certificates or proof of training for work or life experience—are also encouraged to pursue this degree.
Some online courses will be available for the BIS, which requires 120 total credit hours and a capstone experience portfolio to include a reflective essay, self-assessment, and formal presentation to demonstrate integration of multiple two or more disciplines.
Dr. Gretchen Potts serves as the program coordinator for the BIS degree. Potts, UC Foundation Associate Professor of Chemistry, has been with the UTC faculty since 2002.
“This is a unique program designed to serve several different populations of students. Perhaps you are interested in working in forensics with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation–a mixture of Chemistry, Biology, and Criminal Justice courses would be integrated together in a new program of study. Or, perhaps you are interested in running an art gallery after graduation. A collection of courses from Art and Business might better prepare you for that specific career goal,” Potts said.
Potts is offering a workshop for anyone interested in learning more about the BIS degree. All workshop sessions will be held in the UTC University Center, Lookout Mountain Room:
