Chattanooga is hosting the Arts Education Partnership’s National Forum on Arts Learning Without Borders on September 13-14, 2012, at The Chattanoogan Conference Center.
This important conversation will examine how arts-centered solutions improve education, build community, and strengthen our society.
The Southeast Center for Education in the Arts (SCEA) at UTC is the lead local planning organization for the Forum. Kim Wheetley, Executive Director, Laurie Melnik, Director of Theatre Education, Joel Baxley, Director of Visual Art Education, Mary LaBianca, Director of Dance Education, and Susanne Burgess, Director of Music Education, have been working for more than a year envisioning the theme, chairing committees, and assisting with logistics.
“Participants from Chattanooga and across the nation will discuss how the realities of today’s education landscape – technological advances, new models of learning, educational funding, assessments – are carving out an increasingly critical role for the arts to unleash new ways of thinking, working, and learning in America’s classrooms and society,” Kim Wheetley, executive director for SCEA, said.
The Arts Education Partnership (AEP) is a national coalition of more than 100 education, arts, business, cultural, government, and philanthropic organizations. AEP gathers and analyzes research and policy information, fosters dialogue about what works in arts education, and supports advocacy for improved education policy and practice. AEP was established in 1995 and is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Education, in cooperation with the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies.
Local planning partners include Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga; Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau; City of Chattanooga Department of Education, Arts, and Culture; Hamilton County Department of Education; St. Andrews Center; The 35.85 Guild; and The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Media Partners are WRCB, Channel 3 and the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
