Dr. Will Sutton, Dean of College of Engineering and Computer Science, challenged student organizations in the College of Engineering and Computer Science to engage in community service projects that directly impact citizens in Chattanooga. The student chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) responded and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity.
Civil engineering students study the “conception, planning, design, construction, and operation of facilities essential to modern life,” so their work with Habitat for Humanity is a way for members of the student chapter of ASCE to put their skills to practical use.
Haley Robert, an undergraduate student and ASCE secretary, said the experience benefitted student volunteers.
“We were able to use our skills as upcoming civil engineers to help Habitat for Humanity finish a home,” Robert said.
During their volunteer work, the students primed and painted a house.
Robert felt this was a good experience and knows that the hard work of the students will benefit others.
“We felt the joy of being able to help a family in the Chattanooga area by beautifying a home that they will be able to live in,” Robert said. “[Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity] is very fulfilling and we would recommend it to everyone.”
