General B.B. Bell (Ret.), Chair of the Chancellor’s Roundtable at UTC, celebrated the tenure of retired UTC Chancellor Roger Brown and his late wife, Dr. Carolyn Thompson, with the planting of a Scholar Tree in the new student park, under construction in the middle of campus. A plaque will be placed in front of the tree, which will include a quote from Ralph Marston. “What you do today can improve all your tomorrows,” will be inscribed on the plaque.
“Carolyn’s not here. We want to speak for her for years to come,” Bell explained.
This living gift from the Chancellor’s Roundtable will grow up to fifty feet tall, with white flowers that bloom in July and August, giving way to a soft yellow color in its fall leaves.
The Chancellor’s Roundtable advises the chancellor of UTC to advance “the overall development of broad-based community support for The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as a major metropolitan university.”
Upon completion of the new student park, the UTC Student Government Association has decided to name this pleasant spot in honor of Brown and Thompson.
“Carolyn loved the students,” Brown told the crowd. “When Carolyn hosted students at our house, there were no bigger smiles. She knew they are why we are all here. So with these students, our legacy will carry on.”
