Brian Bass, UTC Communication Department student and major, won a prestigious Associated Press Broadcaster’s first place award for Best Sports Coverage.
Bass’ award-winning story focused on the international backgrounds of the UTC’s Men’s Tennis team. Six countries are represented on the 12-member team.
His story aired on “Mocs News,” UTC’s student television newscast. It was one of two finalists for the AP award.
The awards ceremony was held Saturday, April 27, in Murfreesboro. Contest organizers announced second place, then revealed Bass as the winner before playing a clip from the story.
Organizers shared the judges’ comments, which said the story was a unique idea and an example of great writing with good structure to keep the audience engaged.
The win convinced Bass that he’s on the right career path.
“I’m glad I’m in this major,” the senior from Franklin, Tennessee, said.
Mike Andrews, Bass’ instructor and UTC TV Studio manager, said, “Brian earned this honor. He works hard on the UTC sports coverage he brings to Mocs News. We’re proud to have him as a member of Mocs News.”
