More than 132 students from six local middle and high schools submitted 90 posters when the Mathematics Department of The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga held its sixth annual Mathematics Poster Competition. “Mathematics and Statistics in the Behavioral and Social Sciences” was the 2013 theme for the competition.
In each age category, the top prize is $200. Second prize is $100 and third is $50.
“We were extremely pleased with the posters the students created this year,” said Dr. Matt Matthews, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and organizer of the competition. “The judges told me repeatedly that they were impressed with quality of the work. We love having the chance to meet these students and talk to them about our field.”
In the middle school category, Madison Headrick of Ringgold Middle School won first place with her poster on “Effect of Color on Memory Retention.” Peyton Gwaltney, also of Ringgold Middle School, won second place and Ian Smith of Boyd-Buchanan School won third place.
At the 9th and 10th grade level, a poster titled “Alternating Bold Font and Oculomotor Dysfunction” by Chelsea Johnson of Sale Creek Middle High School earned first place. Her colleague from Sale Creek, Daniel Hammer, won second place while Joel Westbrook of Berean Academy won third.
In the senior category for 11th and 12th graders, Emily Horton of Hixson High School took the first place honor for her poster on “Global Sustainability.” The poster winning second place at this level was a group entry by Suhail Arora, Quang Tran, and Billy Yeung and third place was won by Nick Peck. All the winners in this category were from Hixson High School.
