Dr. Manuel F. Santiago, UC Foundation Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, will deliver the summer commencement address on Sunday, August 12 at 2 p.m. in the McKenzie Arena.
Santiago earned the B.S. from Austin Peay State University; the M.S. and Ph.D. from South Dakota State University. Biochemistry and organic, microbial physiology, metabolism, genetics and molecular biology are among his professional interests. He is a U.S. Army Commissioned Officer with the rank of Colonel, USAR.
A faculty member at UTC since 2001, Santiago has been recognized with the UTNAA Outstanding Teacher Award, UC Foundation Professorship and College of Arts, Sciences Outstanding Advisor Award and he was twice named Mortar Board Outstanding Professor.
Santiago is a member of the American Chemical Society, Phi Lambda Upsilon National Honorary Chemical Society and Sigma Xi Research Society. He serves on the UTC Faculty Senate, Curriculum Committee, Departmental Honors Committee and Summer Orientation Committee and as Commencement Marshall. He has served on the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Committee, University Scholarship Committee, Budget and Economics Status Committee.
He has made numerous presentations and has been published in academic journals. His professional service and volunteer work includes Creative Discovery Museum Chemical Demonstrations and his involvement with Hamilton County Project Explore, a program which identifies high quality learners and academically gifted students.
