The Music Department of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will host the Southeastern Composers’ League Forum, February 15 – 17, 2008. This Forum will include five concerts of music composed by members of the League, and some of the performances will be world premieres. A wide range of styles and expressions will be heard. The first concert will feature the UTC Symphonic Band, directed by Stuart Benkert, on Friday, Feb. 15 at 8:00 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall of the UTC Fine Arts Center. The guest soloist will be Philip Barham from Tennessee Tech University.
Concerts 2 and 3 will be on Saturday Feb. 16 in the sanctuary of First-Centenary United Methodist Church, at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Local musicians Sarah Vendsel, Julie Hobbs, and Tim Hinck will be joined by guest performers from the University of Georgia for a variety of solos and duos.
Concert 4, on Sat. Feb. 16 at 8:00 p.m. in UTC’s Roland Hayes Concert Hall, will include a Bluegrass-inspired work called “Fiddlin’ After Midnight,” plus the UTC Chamber Singers, guest soloists, and two electroacoustic compositions.
The Forum will conclude on Sunday Feb. 17 with a concert at 2:00 p.m. in Cadek Recital Hall. This program will include choral music from Covenant College, and UTC voice faculty Rebecca St. Goar will perform songs by Forum coordinator Jonathan McNair.
The Southeastern Composers’ League covers a wide swath of the United States from Washington, DC and Delaware down and around the coastal states to Louisiana, and up to Kentucky, Arkansas, and Tennessee. 28 members will be attending this year’s Forum on the UTC campus, bringing with them as many as 20 guest performers.
