The Department of Theatre and Speech continues the 2008-09 season with the classic drama, An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen. All performances on November 14, 15, 19, 20, 21, 22 begin at 7:30 p.m.
Mac Smotherman, UC Foundation Professor of Theatre at UTC, directs this classic play. An Enemy of the People challenges the nature and shaping of public opinion. The story follows the journey of a naïve man whose discovery is interpreted and used by others for self gain. The play examines the influence, manipulation, and use of power, money, and the media. The strength of the story reverberates as much in our contemporary world as it did when it was first written. Ibsen’s play was disturbing, stimulating and provocative when it first premiered in 1882 and it is disturbing, stimulating and provocative now.
In addition to director Mac Smotherman, the production team includes scenic designer, Steve Ray, costume designer, Sydney Roberts, and lighting designer and technical director, John R. Burgess.
A cast of over thirty student actors includes: Stephen Cau, Sam Fort, Adena Grace, Jamie Harkin, Sean Henon, Madeline Homrich, John Moser, Will Park, Crissy Varnell, Emily White, and Lauren Williams.
