Nicole Brown, payroll specialist for Human Resources and advisor for The Perch, UTC’s first student-run, web-based radio station, served as a featured co-speaker for the Women’s Leadership Luncheon at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Joining Brown was Helen Johnson, co-founder and director of Create-Here. Ann Coulter, a principal with Kennedy, Coulter, Rushing and Watson, LLC, served as the moderator.
This year’s theme for the series of luncheon presentations was “Sporting a Winning Attitude” in a tough economic climate. Using the “Game Day” theme, presenters shared strategies about the importance of team work, mentoring, and leadership.
“I was asked in February 2009 to develop The Perch before the end of the semester,” Brown said. “This was a short amount of time since the spring semester ends for students in April. The Perch went on March 10, 2009. I created a college radio station based on my experience and skills learned from MTSU, UTC and the CWLI Mentoring Project. This project impacts me, UTC and the community.”
The Perch is off the air for winter break, but Brown encourages listeners to tune in on January 11, 2010, at http://www.utc.edu/ThePerch/.
During her Women’s Leadership Luncheon address, Brown also addressed self-doubt she had about completing her graduate degree at the University.
“It was challenging working two jobs and taking two grad classes a semester. The small talks of encouragement with Dr. Deborah Arfken and Dr. Stephanie Bellar sustained me. A team of people in my village inspired me to earn my MPA,” Brown said.
