School of Nursing Assistant Professor Lisa Muirhead, DNP, APRN-BC, ANP was selected to present her research on best practices for vulnerable populations at the 11th Annual National/International Evidence-Based Practice Conference to be held in Phoenix, Arizona in June.
Advanced practice nurses, clinical nurses, physicians, and other healthcare providers, who attend the conference will learn about research as it applies to best practices with vulnerable populations. Selection of presenters was a peer review process and the top 12 scores were chosen for podium presentation.
Her presentation will focus on foot problems among homeless individuals. Foot ailments for that population are often attributed to extended exposure to environmental hazards, poor footwear, prolonged standing and walking, poorly attended foot hygiene, and repetitive trauma.
“The first phase of my research begins with examining characteristics about homeless adults and their reasons of use of foot care services. The outcome of the research may help to identify predictors of health care use, specially foot care services, and factors that must be taken into consideration when designing innovative programs for this complex vulnerable population,” said Muirhead.
Muirhead has been a nurse for 30 years and an advance practice nurse for 20 years. She has spent most of her career managing care for vulnerable populations such as those with HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, spinal cord injury, and chronic pain.
