Students in the campus group Ecological Decisions for a Global Environment (EDGE) kicked off an early Earth Day celebration in the University Center, where organizations educated students about environmental issues. Earth Day is celebrated around the world on April 22.
Vendors urged UTC students to recycle more, protect open spaces, and stop seafood contamination. Organizations included Oceana, The Sierra Club, and Tennessee Wild. EDGE also sold plants, baked goods, and t-shirts to help fund campus education efforts.
“I think more young people are really concerned about the environment, sometimes more than older people,” said mass communication freshman Daniel Voigt.
EDGE, Ecological Decisions for a Global Environment (EDGE), wants more students to get involved in efforts to protect the environment. They recommend taking simple steps such as switching from plastic to reusable grocery bags.
William Miller, a junior pre-vet major, said he is impressed with Chattanooga and its focus on environmental issues.
“Compared to other cities, the downtown area and the campus are very nice,” said Miller.
