The UTC Department of Music presents “Tryin’ to Get Home,” a concert of spirituals arranged for soprano and piano by UTC Professor Roland Carter with guest soprano, Gail Robinson-Oturu on Thursday, October 7, 7:30 p.m., Roland Hayes Concert Hall, UTC Fine Arts Center. On Friday evening, October 8, also at 7:30 p.m., the music of Schumann and Chopin will be celebrated in a piano recital by guest pianist Kristian Klefstad. This event will also be held in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall in the UTC Fine Arts Center.
Both events are free admission and open to the public.
Soprano Gail Robinson-Oturu, a distinguished performing artist, educator and scholar is currently on faculty at Austin-Peay University. Reviewers have praised her for her artistry, interpretation, and technique. She will be singing a program of spirituals arranged by UTC Ruth Holmberg Professor of American Music, Roland Carter. Carter’s spiritual arrangements are a staple of choirs all over the world. However, the arrangements to be presented this evening are art-songs in every sense of that terminology – they represent the highest development of these well-loved tunes and texts into finished musical gems that sparkle, each with its own light and color.
Dr. Kristian Klefstad is a professor at Belmont University where he teaches piano, pedagogy, and piano ensemble. He is an active solo and collaborative recitalist, clinician, lecturer, and adjudicator in the United States. Klefstad will present a program of works by Robert Schumann and Frederic Chopin, two beloved Romantic piano composers, the bicentennial of whose birth is being celebrated world wide this year. The program will include Schumann’s Kreisleriana and Nocturnes, Etudes, Ballades and Scherzos by Chopin.
