The University has honored David and Mary Copeland with the dedication of The Copeland Conference Room in the new library.
David and Mary Copeland attended the dedication on July 18 along with their family, including their daughter, Dr. Valerie Rutledge, Dean of the College of Health, Education and Professional Studies, and son in law Jack Rutledge. Also in attendance were Dr. Bryan Rowland and Caleb Whitted. Chancellor Angle attended, speaking about the new room and thanking Jack and Valerie Rutledge for their contribution to the University
“The fact that that the conference room is facing Chamberlain field means a lot to me. I was here as an undergraduate and that’s where a lot of the activities happened.”
Rutledge goes on to say, “I like the fact that Chamberlain field is still the center of campus, and that it gives you a view across an institution that has meant a lot to our family in many different ways.”
David Copeland was the Tennessee Representative from 1968-1992 and also ran for Governor in 1994 with his daughter Valerie managing his campaign. Copeland started the family owned business, Copelands, Inc. in 1965, which is now run by his son, Mike. David Copeland is the author of the Copeland amendment, which has contributed to the financial well-being of the state of Tennessee.
Mary Copeland was involved in many civic duties and political groups in the community and active in the schools that Rutledge and her brother attended.
“I think in their own way, they both demonstrated for us how it is important to give time to those things that matter and that make a difference, not just for you, but for the people and community around you,” Rutledge says.
The Copeland Conference room honors David and Mary Copeland for all of their work and support for the University.
