Veterans Day is Saturday, Nov. 11, and we have a week’s worth of events to honor UTC veterans.
Remember, Veterans Day is a celebration, not a time for mourning. It offers respect both to the veterans who served honorably and are still living as well as those who sacrificed their lives for our country.
Events are open to students, faculty and staff who are veterans or active military or family dependents.
Here is the Veterans Appreciation Week schedule:
Monday, Nov. 6
Free Veterans Breakfast: Sign the guest list at the cash register and enjoy breakfast at Crossroads Cafeteria from 8-11 a.m. Reserved tables are set aside for veterans.
Tuesday, Nov. 7
Women in the Military Appreciation Day Luncheon: From 12:30-2:30 p.m., all female veterans are invited to share a free meal together at Crossroads Cafeteria after signing the guest register. There will be a display on the history of women in the military and also one with some current female veterans at UTC.
Hamilton County Veterans Service Officer Chuck Alsobrook will be at the Veterans Service Lounge from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. to help UTC students with questions about Veterans Administration claims.
Thursday, Nov. 9
Coffee with the Chancellor. From 8-9:30 a.m. Chancellor Steven Angle will be in the Veteran Service Lounge to meet and talk to UTC veterans and express his appreciation for their service. Veterans can do the same to the chancellor and also ask any questions that’s on their minds.
Vets Mobile Service Center will be on campus from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. outside the University Center in Lansing Court. Veterans can meet VA mental Health professionals and also have a free box lunch.
Friday, Nov. 10
Taps Project. At 8:45 a.m., trumpet players will be placed in and around the campus. At 9:45 a.m., the first player will present “Taps” with the second player beginning once the first has arrived at the piece’s third statement. The melody of “Taps” will make its way around campus from player to player. If you are a musician interested in being part of the event, you need:
- A copy of our official version of Taps (preferably memorized, but not required).
- B-flat Trumpet (if using a C, you must transpose the music to the correct key).
- Appropriate professional attire.
- Raincoat or umbrella in case of some weather.
