Learning the ropes
Workshops on how to apply for a Gilman Scholarship and reviews of the required essays have been scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, and Friday, Sept 21, both in the University Center Heritage Room. To make an appointment, email rachel-pusey@utc.edu.
Four students in the UTC Honors College have received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, awarded by the U.S. Department of State to help students afford to study abroad.
Two UTC students were given the scholarships for study-abroad trips over the summer while the other two are for fall trips.
The students are:
Summer
- Austin Holdsworth, senior in business marketing, travel to Kenya: $3,500
- Visesiya Uwifashije, junior in human resource management, travel to Spain: $3,500
Fall
- Elena Nourabadi, junior in business marketing, travel to Thailand: $3,000
- Jared Steiman, Brock scholar and junior in international and English creative writing, travel to Mexico: $5,000
Across the country, about 1,150 students received scholarships for summer semester while a little more than 1,000 were awarded money for fall.
In the 2016-17 academic year, 2,922 students received Gilman Scholarships, according to the program’s website. Since it began in 2001, more than 89,000 students from the U.S. have been awarded funds through Gilman Scholarships, the website says.
