On Friday, Feb. 8, a group of 12 students from the all-male McCallie School came to UTC for a sewing lesson.
Led by Chalise Ludlow, costume design and production instructor in the UTC Theatre Department, each student made a small backpack, a multi-step process.
They each had to learn to measure and cut fabric, and how to sew straight seams on a sewing machine. From there they learned to make a slip stitch, which can be used to hem pants. They then learned to use a grommet machine and, finally, how to sew on buttons.
