The UTC Executive Leadership Team joins the campus community in reflecting on the guilty verdicts for former police officer Derek Chauvin handed down in Minneapolis on Tuesday for the murder of George Floyd. None of us can fully comprehend the circumstances that led to such a sad series of events. The impact of that event will linger forever, and our response as individuals and as a society will determine the ultimate legacy of this moment.
We reaffirm UTC’s commitment to a welcoming environment for all as we now strive to achieve reconciliation, healing and unity for our campus community. Our campus community includes many races and ethnicities and represents locations across the state, nation and throughout the world.
Diversity is a great strength, but it also means that all of us—administration, faculty, staff and students alike—must treat every person in this community with the respect and compassion they deserve. No matter our backgrounds, our bond as Mocs unifies us in a common cause and a responsibility to one another.
Our campus community should be thoughtful and respectful to one another, not only during difficult challenges in our lives, but at all times. As Mocs, we are part of a university that celebrates and draws strength from diversity and equity. When we return to campus this fall, a unified approach will continue to be the UTC way.
Our deeply held values of respect, inclusion and compassion are our guideposts, as individuals and as an institution. Each of us has a role to play in creating the future our students, our community and our nation deserve.
