Angie To, an artist whose works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, has been named the new head of the Department of Art at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
She will start July 1.
“I am honored to be entrusted with the leadership of this vibrant and dedicated community of artists, designers, and scholars,” she said. “Throughout this spring I have been welcomed by my new colleagues, who continually impress me with their dynamism and obvious care for the success of their students and for the Art Department.”
Professor To comes to UTC from Alfred University in New York, where she has been on the faculty since 2002. While at the university, she served as chair of the Foundations Division from 2008 to 2021 and as acting dean of the School of Art in 2016. She has an excellent track record of community arts engagement through her work as co-founder of the arts incubator Broadway Union, based in Hornell, N.Y.
Her artistic practice is centered on explorations of the natural landscape through painting, drawing and printmaking. Her art has been shown in galleries in the United States and other countries.
“I believe that artists and designers play a vital role in our communities and that equity in education is key to the future of our society,” she said. “I look forward to being a part of the UTC community and collaborating with my colleagues in the Art Department and across campus to continue strengthening our creative programs and realizing the potential of our educational mission.”

Faculty guide students to meet individual goals for successful futures in diverse fields. With about 300 students and 15 full-time faculty, the department offers bachelor in fine arts degrees with concentrations in graphic design, painting & drawing, photography & media art and sculpture as well as bachelor in art degrees in art education, art history and studio art. The department also is home to the Institute for Contemporary Art, which presents challenging and adventurous works by contemporary artists.
