National Arbor Day is April 29, but because of the different growing seasons across the country, each state is given the option of setting its own. In the South, planting trees in late April is an iffy proposition. It may be too hot by that time for a tree to successfully root before it succumbs to the heat.
Tennessee has set its Arbor Day for the first Friday in March so, on March 4, Hill Craddock, UC Foundation Davenport professor in biology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and his students planted several trees at the UTC Intramural Sports Complex next to Engel Stadium.
