On Wednesday, July 31, emergency responders and volunteers from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the city of Chattanooga and Hamilton County came to campus for an armed intruder emergency training exercise.
Hosted by the UTC Department of Public Safety, the exercise simulated an armed intruder scenario in Lupton Hall, allowing participants to practice their response procedures.
“With the prevalence of active violence in educational settings and various other environments, and from my own personal experience responding to those events, I knew the importance of having a training exercise such as this one,” said Sean O’Brien, associate vice chancellor for public safety and UTC police chief.
“The research shows us that as first responders, we have to train and be prepared because it’s such a dynamic event,” he said. “Building those relationships with our partner agencies is critical to having the ability to respond appropriately.”
O’Brien thanked the Chattanooga Police Department, Chattanooga Fire Department, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, Hamilton County Emergency Medical Services, Hamilton County Emergency Management, Hamilton County 911 District Administration and all others who participated in the exercise.
