Dear Students,
I know this has been a very trying day for all of us. We are very fortunate to have such a strong Office of Public Safety to guide us through an event like this, and I am relieved to know we are all safe.
I was on campus with you today, so I know the stress that the unknown around this incident created. Although no evidence of an active shooter or injuries was found, I know the uncertainty during the lockdown was very stressful.
After consulting with campus leadership, we have decided to resume classes at 8 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, August 22. This decision is based on the knowledge that our campus is a safe space and was not under physical threat. Resuming classes can hopefully help us all feel a sense of normalcy.
I know that each of us had our own unique experiences during the lockdown—some mild while others were more intense. If you are experiencing a crisis after hours, you can use the UTC CARE line at (423) 425-CARE (2273) to be connected to after-hours services including crisis counseling.
During regular hours of operation, the Counseling Center will offer individual counseling sessions. To make an appointment, students should call (423) 425-4438 or visit University Center Room 128 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
This is a time when we can all provide support and show kindness to one another. If you are especially concerned about a fellow student or any individual on campus, please submit a Community Member of Concern Form at www.utc.edu/coc, email sos@utc.edu for students, or utchumanresources@utc.edu for employees.
Sincerely,
Chancellor Lori Bruce
