Information regarding the community event on campus Saturday, August 15, 2015
The University is honored and proud to host the community-wide memorial service on our campus this Saturday. As you might imagine, an event this momentous comes with a few logistical challenges.
General Information
Parking and traffic patterns on and around campus will be disrupted. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your patience. If you have to be on campus for a particular event, we encourage you to plan to arrive early.
Several roads will be closed around the McKenzie Arena beginning early Saturday morning:
- Houston Street from Vine to 4th streets
- 4th Street from Houston to Mabel streets
- Mabel Street to Douglas Street
Other streets may be closed or blocked temporarily to accommodate the motorcades. Please be patient and plan your travel to include additional time.
Parking On Campus
Many lots will be closed, including the 5th Street Garage and Lots 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 20, 4, and 1. These lots must be cleared of all vehicles. Vehicles left in the lots are subject to towing.
Staff who are required to report to work on Saturday should park in the parking garage of the old library. If all levels of the garage are full, you can try parking near the Administrative Services Building on Palmetto Street. If there is no parking there, feel free to park in any regularly marked parking spot (not handicapped or in a No Parking area).
Campus Facilities
- The IT Solutions Center will be open Saturday and Sunday, 1-9p.m. in Pfeiffer Hall.
- UTC Bookstore will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
- The UTC Library will be closed.
- The ARC will be closed.
- Student support offices scheduled to open extended hours will be closed.
- Cross Roads dining will be open, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
- The University Center Food Court will be open, 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Housing Move In
If you have any questions about move-in options please contact the Housing Office at 423-425-4304 or consult the move-in website at http://www.utc.edu/housing/future-students/operationmovein.php.
Returning students and transfer students may check in at the following times:
- Thursday, August 13, 2015 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
- Friday, August 14, 2015 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
- Sunday, August 16, 2015 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Step Ahead Math Program
If you are participating in the Step Ahead Math Program, the review session begins at 9 a.m. in the EMCS; exam runs 10 a.m.-noon. Parking may be available in adjacent lots. Plan to arrive early.
If You Plan to Attend the Memorial Service
The Marine Forces Reserve, the Navy Reserve and the City of Chattanooga will hold the service at 2 p.m. Saturday at McKenzie Arena, 720 E. 4th St.
Limited parking will be available on campus. Also, parking will be available at Engel Stadium. Shuttle buses will be running from Engel to the McKenzie Arena at 10 a.m. and will return participants after the service.
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to attend. U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke also are expected.
Mayor Berke encourages all Chattanoogans who are able to attend Saturday’s event at McKenzie Arena and show support to the families of the five men who lost their lives to the July 16 shooting.
No large bags or backpacks will be allowed into the arena. Small bags will be screened at the door. Availability is limited to 8,500 seats on a first-come basis.
