William “Tripp” Woolf has won the 2016 North Callahan Essay Prize. Woolf captured the $1000 award for his essay “Mammy’s Children: Power, Agency, and Redemption in Dessa Rose.” UTC English Professor Aaron Shaheen directed Woolf’s work.
The Callahan Prize is awarded every year to an undergraduate whose exceptional essay addresses a subject related to art, music, philosophy, religion, rhetoric/literature, history, theater, or studies that combine these disciplines. The essays submitted are evaluated by a committee of interdisciplinary professors.
The prize money is funded by an endowment by the late Dr. North Callahan, distinguished professor, author, and alumnus of The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
