The Chattanooga Symphony will feature a work by UTC faculty composer Jonathan McNair on its upcoming Chamber Series concert “Musical Passport.” This program will be on Sunday, October 2, at 3:00 p.m., in the Silver Ballroom of the Read House Hotel downtown.

McNair’s work “An Earthen Man” is for baritone voice and string orchestra. It is based on poetry by Wendell Berry (used by permission). Influences of blues, opera, art-song, the avante-garde, and a brief touch of bluegrass mingle in this varied work that ranges from humor to grief to peace and joy.
Baritone David Tahere joins the CSO for the performance. In addition to McNair’s composition, the concert will include works by Bartok, Ravel, Villa-Lobos, and Respighi.
The Chamber Series—a favorite among CSO patrons—features beautiful music in a beautiful setting. This four-concert series at the Read House Silver Ballroom provides an intimate feel as the CSO performs some of the best of chamber repertoire.
McNair is the Ruth S. Holmberg Professor of American Music at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. In this capacity, and as past-President of the Southeastern Composers League, he has worked to present many performances of the works of other contemporary composers, especially living composers, through festivals on the UTC campus and in the Chattanooga community.
McNair’s music has been performed across the United States and in Europe, Canada, and Brazil. His music has been broadcast via radio and released on CD by the Capstone label of Parma records, the AUR label, ACA Digital, and Ablaze Records. Selected works have been published by Potenza Music and Keepe Publishing House.
Numerous organizations have awarded him commissions, including the Brazos Valley Symphony, the American Composers Forum, the Chattanooga Downtown Partnership, the Chattanooga Symphony Core Ensembles, and others.
