Come and hear a panel of experts talk about career opportunities for students majoring in traditional humanities disciplines.
- Anna Savary, UTC’s English as a Second Language coordinator, worked in France, Italy, and Poland. Anna has her graduate degree in Linguistics and Intercultural Communication from Jagiellonian University (Cracow, Poland).
- Tim Ryan is a manager at OneAmerica in Indianapolis. He has degrees in Art and English and has worked extensively in publishing. Previously he has served in a variety of capacities at John Wiley & Sons, Inc., including Director of Author Services and Editor. Tim earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Art and his MA in English at Illinois State University.
- David Pleins is a Professor at Santa Clara University in California. Many of his students have gone on to work in Silicon Valley.
The Fourth Annual Poetry/ Flash Fiction Night – Student competition and speaker
Tuesday, March 7th, 3:45 – 6:00 PM Chickamauga Room, University Center.
The event will feature a reading by UTC’s Latin-Americanist and published writer Dr. Edwin Murillo. Edwin Murillo’s poems and short-stories offer a glimpse into the Latin-American experience in the United States. With his writing, Murillo engages several misconceptions of Latin-American presence in the United States. A mixed consciousness of being and struggling to belong while always reminded of Hispanic’s other-class citizenry. In a very small way, Murillo’s words address fallacies about Latino existence, while documenting the anxiety of being a foreigner in your own land.
After an intermission of socializing and refreshments, the second half of the evening will be dedicated to the competition. The deadline to enter the poetry/short fiction competition is Monday, February 27. A $100 Amazon gift card is the prize.
MCLL welcomes local high school students

Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (MCLL) will welcome local high school students to sit in on UTC classes and hear from current students majoring and minoring in a language or humanities. Feel free to stop by and introduce yourselves to these students. We would love to see language and humanities majors and minors join the fun.

In this documentary, Director Ricardo E. Causo, MCLL graduate, follows the life of a Latin American immigrant in the US working as a cobbler. There will be an introduction from the director himself before the film and a panel discussion following the film. The panel will include director Ricardo E. Causo and Spanish Professors Dr. José-Luis Gastañaga, Dr. Edwin Murillo, and Dr. Lynn Purkey.
Nature and Language Hike
Sunday, March 26 time TBA. Meet at East End of Holt near the Greenhouse to meet the biology van and carpool as needed.
We will hike to the Pigeon Pocket in Pigeon Mountain, GA, and will be led by Dr. Hill Craddock, Professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences. This is a joint hike with Tri – Beta (Biology Honors Society) and MCLL and ALL are welcome. There will be a photo-language scavenger hunt. RSVP is not required but appreciated.
