The Department of Theatre and Speech continues the 2009-10 season with Anon(ymous) by Naomi Iizuka on November 13, 14,18, 19, 20, 21. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the Dorothy Hackett Ward Theatre, UTC Fine Arts Center, corner of Vine and Palmetto Streets.
Anon(ymous) is a stirring and poetic adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey set in contemporary America. This mythic tale focuses on the journey of a young refugee, Anon, and his search to reclaim his past. As Anon follows a trail of goddesses, sweat-shop owners and one-eyed butchers, he listens for the voice of his mother as she sings from the past, guiding him into the future.
Director Gaye Jeffers was drawn to the play’s experimental style and the beautiful imagery that Iizuka conjures to reveal this story.
“Delving into the richness of this story opens up numerous opportunities to step outside the box of realism. The set design reaches out into the audience and the sounds of storms, surf and war are created live by the cast,” Jeffers said.
Part dream and part nightmare, Anon(ymous) creates new meaning from an ancient myth.
Jeffers is joined by set designer Steve Ray, guest lighting designer Larry von Werssowetz, costume designer Sydney Roberts and technical director John R. Burgess.
Cast members include: Heather Chang, Emanuel Clark, Savannah Daigle, Rachel Fisher, Sam Fort, Matt Gonzalez, Jamie Harkin, Stephanie Hirsh, Amanda Howard, Tiffany Kelly, Alex Levy, John Moser, Britney Naylor, Daniel Pound, David Seeber, Alexander Skae, Kenneth Stewart, Crissy Varnell, Lauren Williams and Madeleine Young.
