WUTC-FM 88.1 will provide an entire day of holiday favorites beginning at 6 a.m. on December 25. National Public Radio’s news magazine “Morning Edition” will air from 6-10 a.m., followed by:
10 a.m. – 11 a.m. – “Hanukkah 2009” – An NPR favorite for nearly two decades, acclaimed authors explore Hanukkah stories written for Hanukkah Lights. This year’s show features new stories by Danit Brown, Michael Blumenthal and Rachel Shukert. Hosted by NPR’s Susan Stamberg and Murray Horwitz.
11 a.m. – 12 NOON – “Choirs & Carols: An NPR Christmas” – Join host Lisa Simeone for ancient harmonies from Trio Medieval, traditional carols from the Riga Dom Boys Choir, and a rarely heard Christmas song by Sibelius, straight from Finland’s YL Choir.
12 noon – 1 p.m. – “Fresh Air with Terry Gross”
1 p.m. – 2 p.m. – “A Carolina Christmas from Biltmore Estate with Kathy Matea” – A Carolina Christmas is a festive celebration of the Appalachian folk traditions with two-time female vocalist of the year Kathy Matea singing tunes from her holiday albums. Joining Kathy will be the Carolinas’ premiere vocal ensemble, VOX, as well as Baroque/Celtic trio The Beggar Boys.
2 p.m. – 3 p.m. – “All Songs Considered for the Holidays” – Jolly Santa Bob Boilen and his magical elves as they check their list for the best eclectic mix of Christmas tunes by emerging and break-out bands. This is the first All Songs Considered holiday special from NPR music.
3 p.m. – 4 p.m. – “Christmas From Around the Country” – NPR takes you from churches to concert halls to auditoriums to town halls all across the nation in search of performances that express the best of the holiday season.
4 p.m. – 8 p.m. – “All Things Considered”
8 p.m. – 9 p.m. – “Tinsel Tales: NPR Christmas Favorites” – Lynn Neary features stories from the NPR archives that touch on the meaning of Christmas. David Sedaris, Bailey White, John Henry Faulk join other NPR voices telling stories of the season.
9 p.m. – 10 p.m. – “Jazz Piano Christmas XX” – On this ever-popular program we’ll hear solo performances and duo combos playing original interpretations of our favorite holiday classics. Artists include Dr. Billy Taylor, Ramsey Lewis, Patricia Barber, Eldar, and Robert Glasper.
10 p.m. – 12 a.m. – “A Paul Winter Solstice Concert” – Paul Winter performs in the world’s largest Gothic cathedral – New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine – highlight the music of the Winter Consort with gospel singer Theresa Thomason, Brazilian singer/guitarist Renato Braz, and woodwind master Paul McCandless.
