Out of five recipients statewide for the 2018 Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award, two are from UTC.
Dr. Richard Brown, executive vice chancellor for Finance and Administration, and Dr. June Hanks, associate professor in Department of Physical Therapy, have been selected for the honor, which recognizes dedicated efforts by administrators, faculty and students in Tennessee higher education, including volunteer work, community organization, public service, charitable service and leadership.
The philosophy of Brown, who has been at UTC for 32 years, is “we are blessed to be blessings to others.”
“Chattanooga and the state of Tennessee are special places that have given so much to me and helped transform my life,” he says.
Brown has worked with the United Way of Greater Chattanooga for many years, chaired the Hamilton County Juvenile Court Commission and the Hamilton County 991 board of directors. He has been a member of the board of directors for Siskin Rehabilitation Hospital and the Bessie Smith Cultural Center.
Hanks has traveled to Haiti multiple times since 1997, bringing her physical therapy skills to the country, considered the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. She lived in the country from 2010-2014 and created a program that provides outpatient rehabilitation services, prosthetic and orthotic services and community outreach.
She is a member of the board of directors for the Tennessee Physical Therapy Association and also as Research Chair for the group and has been on the American Physical Therapy Association Scholarship Committee since 2015.
The Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award is named after the late state representative who was instrumental in passing the legislation that created it.
