Four of the UTC professional accompanist staff will present the recital “Those Who Can… Do it All” on Tuesday, January 12, at 7:30 p.m. Accompanists Tim Hinck, Jenny Parker, Terry Sanford, and Penny Tullock are the featured performers. This free concert will be held in the Roland Hayes Recital Hall of the UTC Fine Arts Center.
Both at UTC and around Chattanooga, these musicians usually sit quietly at the piano playing music that other people have selected, wondering if all the little errors that popped up in rehearsal are going to reappear in the performance, and hoping that the person for whom they are playing will remember to give them a bow at the end.
This concert gives the four musicians a chance to showcase their talents in what may be the first occurrence in history of an accompanists’ recital.
Tim Hinck is most often seen at UTC in connection with the UTC Opera. He will perform two of his own compositions, a Trio Sonata for Flute, Violin and Piano, and “Novaya,” an experimental piece for Alto flute and piano.
Jenny Parker is often seen at UTC accompanying students from Ron Ulen’s voice studio. Parker will play the “Prelude” from Debussy’s “Pour Le Piano” suite. Additionally she will join Penny Tullock singing Rossini’s “La Regata Veneziana.” Tullock is frequently seen at UTC accompanying students of Dr. Rebecca St. Goar. Her talents as a singer in the Chattanooga area are well known. Tullock will be singing a set of songs by Gabriel Faure as well as the duet with Parker.
Terry Sanford accompanies frequently in many studios, often playing in last minute “fill-in” situations. Sanford has chosen to sing three of Samuel Barber’s settings of James Joyce texts and also will be conducting a performance of his choral composition “Lamentation over Jerusalem”.
All four of these accompanists have proven their talents and worth many times over behind the keyboard while someone else was the star. On this one night, they are very excited to be moving directly into the spotlight to share their other talents and to prove that “those who can, do it all.”
